Crazy Bird is back!

Every year about this time we get a visit from a friend we call "Crazy Bird". For a couple weeks this little guy beats himself against the window in front of our laundry room. He hides in the Rhododendron bushes and then all at once pounces at the window and tries to peck the hell out of his reflection. This year marks Crazy Bird's fifth appearance. I've identified this feisty fellow as a juvenile male Northern Cardinal. I seriously doubt it's the same bird each year, as Crazy Bird does not have the crest of a full-grown male. This leads me to believe that the bird who has come to visit us this year may be Son-of-son-of-son-of-son-of the OCB (Original Crazy Bird). I can hear his dad passing along the family lore: "Son, when you are old enough to leave the nest you must travel to a place called Copperhead Villa. There you will see the giant Rhododendron. Once inside you will catch a glimpse of your nemesis. You must try repeatedly to attack and kill this bird. He will stop and nothing to destroy you. No one has ever defeated him. Here are some seeds for your journey. Good luck and Godspeed, my son."

In other bird news, Chip spotted a Bald Eagle on the River trail the other day. I'm so jealous. I'm still going down there at least every other day. Always listening for the voice of the Eagle...
